In our 2025 Festival, we will be running a major exhibition in the National Museum of Scotland. Spaceship Earth will delve into the realms of science fiction and explore solutions to build a more sustainable existence.
As part of this, Edinburgh Science ran a Sci-Ku Competition, inviting everyone to imagine a thriving, sustainable Earth 100 years from now. We challenged people of all ages to write a Sci-Ku about what they imagine this future to look like.
What is a Sci-Ku?
A Sci-Ku is a 3-line poem about science that has a syllable pattern that goes 5–7–5. They are based on haikus, a type of poetry from Japan. Why not have a go at writing your own?
The Winners
We had over 600 incredible, original and thought-provoking entries to the competition, as well as some amazing artworks that entrants created inspired by their own Sci-Kus.
We picked 2 winners each from 3 categories: primary school, secondary school and an open category for all ages. We also selected some High Commended entries that were just too good to miss. Check them all out below!
The winning Sci-Kus will be featured in the Spaceship Earth exhibition as part of the 2025 Edinburgh Science Festival. Edinburgh Science is also commissioning Scottish artists from Edinburgh College of Art’s Illustration degree course to create a graphic art piece inspired by each of the winning Sci-Kus. These artworks will be displayed alongside the winning Sci-Kus in the exhibition.
To check out the Sci-Kus and art pieces in all their glory, the Spaceship Earth exhibition will be open from Sat 5 – Sun 20 April 2025 in the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland.
