Scotland is often portrayed as politically distinct from the rest of the UK, an idea underpinning devolution.

On core values, Scots frequently look similar to voters in the rest of the UK. Prof Ailsa Henderson explores why perceptions of difference still matter and shows how assumptions of uniformity, including about British national identity and our shared past, have wider implications for the state. She has been awarded The University of Edinburgh’s Tam Dalyell Prize for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science in recognition of her work on measuring public attitudes in Scotland and the union.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
