During Careers Hive, the National Museum of Scotland’s Grand Gallery became a vibrant hub of exploration and discovery.
This iconic space was filled with hands-on STEM activities, sparking curiosity and empowering students to imagine their futures in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Over five days, 2,061 pupils and teachers from 38 schools participated in Careers Hive, our free interactive STEM careers event. This year, we expanded our audience to include P7s, with attendees from 15 local authority areas. Notably, 709 pupils came from high-SIMD areas (Quantile 1 & 2), ensuring greater access for those from areas of high deprivation. To further support accessibility, we provided travel bursaries to 18 schools.
STEM Comes to Life in the Grand Gallery
The Experience STEM Exhibition hosted 17 interactive activities, each designed to highlight diverse skills and careers within STEM. Our volunteers, representing a variety of STEM professions, guided pupils through activities that ranged from energy efficiency experiments in the Cosy Cosy House (sponsored by Vattenfall) to cutting-edge technological exploration in Future Farming, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Ingenious grant.
Hear from Paul Steen, Head of District Heating Business Development at Vattenfall Heat UK about how these small model houses teach participants about how insulation can be used with various items. They can then test the effectiveness of the insulation using an IR camera.
By sponsoring the Cosy Cosy Houses, Vattenfall made it possible for students to experience STEM in an unforgettable way. Together, we’re creating a future where young minds are equipped to tackle challenges, innovate solutions, and build a sustainable world.
