A careers event with a difference

Mon 28 Oct – Sat 2 Nov 2024, National Museum of Scotland

Careers Hive offers S1–3 students a new way of looking at their futures by allowing participants to explore different career pathways and roles across multiple sectors. Visitors have the chance to get hands-on with a range of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) activities and meet early career STEM professionals, who are on hand to answer questions and share their career experiences.

As S1–3 reach the point in their education where they choose their subjects, Careers Hive works to showcase that STEM skills are transferrable and further studying STEM subjects will help their future careers in a wide range of sectors.

We’re planning to welcome around 3,500 students to this year’s Careers Hive, which runs Monday 28 October – Saturday 2 November at the National Museum of Scotland. Each visit lasts approximately 2 hours plus a half hour break and is completely free for state schools to enjoy.

The event is made up of two sections:

Experience STEM Exhibition

Four themed zones containing hands-on activities for pupils to explore, each covering different areas of STEM careers and manned by volunteer STEM professionals. Central to these zones is the Think Tank, a dedicated space for pupils to informally chat one-on-one with STEM professionals and ask the questions that matter to them most.

Life After Leaving School

An interactive panel discussion with early career STEM professionals from a range of industries who talk about their career journey, from the traditional to the unconventional, and answer pupils’ questions. Pupils also have their say on important issues such as gender representation in STEM.

Digital Resources

Alongside your visit to Careers Hive at the National Museum of Scotland, you will also be able to access online resources which will allow you to deliver our Skills and Strengths workshop to your class at a time that suits you. This includes videos, print materials and teacher resources.
