The Prime Minister’s announcement of a national skills drive to unlock opportunities for young people in tech is a vital and welcome move.

At Edinburgh Science, we have long believed that science and technology education is not just a matter of future jobs; it is a matter of justice, equity and national resilience.

For over three decades, we have been at the forefront of delivering inspiring and hands-on STEM education. Each year, through our Careers Hive programme, we connect thousands of secondary school students directly with scientists, engineers and technologists from across sectors. Through Generation Science, we reach every local authority in Scotland, including rural, remote and underserved areas, bringing high-quality STEM workshops to primary schools, often for free or at a heavily subsidised rate. These are not just shows; they are door-openers.

This newly announced skills programme recognises that technology is core infrastructure for society, and that we must break down barriers to acquiring tech skills to be able to give “every young person the chance of a good, well-paid job and a bright future”.

This principle is at the heart of Edinburgh Science’s work. Indeed, it is our driving mission.

As such, we stand ready to partner with His Majesty’s Government, industry and funders to deliver on this promise quickly, inclusively and with measurable impact. Edinburgh Science brings national reach with a track record of delivery in schools and classrooms across all Scottish local authorities. We offer high-impact programmes with proven models of STEM engagement across all age groups. We hold deep expertise built over decades in public science education and communication. And we maintain trusted networks across education, government and industry.

As we look ahead to Edinburgh Science Festival 2026, we are curating a programme that highlights the importance of collaboration – across geographies as well as disciplines – in building STEM literacy and a future-ready workforce. We see this recently announced national skills drive as naturally aligned to our work and we are ready to support.
